Resident Evil
Zach Cregger (2026)
I’ve never seen something so accurately capture the feeling of playing a horror video game. The main character, Bryan, is essentially a self insert for the player. He yells and screams his way through situations. He’s constantly swearing under his breath at the new situations and rooms he encounters. That’s basically a 1:1 of my own experience playing Grace’s sections in RE: Requiem earlier this year. This extends to the way the film uses comedy too. It didn’t feel like the campy one liner or absurd situation type of comedy you’d expect from RE1, RE4, or Leon’s section in RE: Requiem. It reminded me of the Looney Tunes ass situations I got into running away from The Girl as Grace. Or dying laughing after I got jumpscared and started panic shooting, missing every single shot. The humor in the movie is the humour the player feels at their own incompetence and the sillyness at which they react to the crazy situations Resident Evil presents.
All that to say this was the most fun movie I’ve seen all year, and that’s because it was able to translate how much fun the Resident Evil games are. Equal parts scary and funny. Both going hand in hand for the player.
